We recognise the dignity of the individual and have a total commitment to the development of office bearers, shop stewards, staff and members enabling them to realise their full potential in an environment of equal opportunity for all.

We believe in social transformation through sustainable local government and we are committed to excellent service delivery in all levels of the community.

OUR GOALS

IMATU’s operations are geared to retain and increase our membership base by meeting the expectations and requirements of our members.

  • We create a stable work environment and encourage staff participation in the overall management of the union.
  • We encourage members to become actively involved in the structures of the union.
  • We communicate effectively throughout the structures of the union with members.
  • We pursue a policy of training which will enable our office bearers, shop stewards, staff and members to be more effective on their jobs which will enhance their personal growth and create an effective and efficient local government service to the benefit of all South African citizens.
  • Our target is to be regarded as the foremost trade union in South Africa in the industry of local government.

IMATU might be a young trade union (we were formed on 8 March 1996 at the inaugural congress in Bloemfontein), and anyone who lacks knowledge about the background of the formation of the union might be momentarily pardoned for thinking it lacks experience.

Not so- the formation of the union IMATU” originates from the amalgamation of  the South African Association of Municipal Employees (SAAME), the Johannesburg Municipal Employees Association (JMEA), the National Union of Employees of Local Authorities (NUELA), the Durban Municipal Employees Association (DMES) and the South African Local Authorities and Allied Workers Union (SALAAWU).

The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union, IMATU is a young, vibrant and most progressive trade union operating in the municipal and allied sector of the South African workplace. We boast some 70 000 members spread across all municipalities in South Africa, from the largest metropolitan city core to the rural “platteland” of the country.

Wherever a local municipality or district municipality exists, you are bound to find a local branch of IMATU.

Some of the core services and benefits that we offer are:

  • Representation at the SALGBC which means that member’s interests as a group and an individual, employed in local government is protected- and we negotiate member’s salary increases, service benefits and conditions of service
  • Representation at the workplace in Local Labour Forums, grievance procedures, disciplinary hearings or just general representation when it becomes unbearable to work under “those” conditions
  • A loan scheme with favourable repayment terms
  • Group financial schemes and group insurance benefits
  • Social activities at branches throughout the Regions

IMATU is the only trade union in the industry of local government that offers its members professionalism, integrity and dedication to its cause. As a trade union we offer a home for every municipal worker.

Our political non-alliance ensures that we are able to concentrate on what is important for our members and the communities that they serve, namely to ensure social transformation through sustainable local government.

We leave the right and privilege to associate and disassociate with political parties to our member’s individual choice. Our constitution is one of the most progressive of all registered trade unions in South Africa.

IMATU receives the recognition of all role players in Government and the community.

IMATU, in a short span of time, has succeeded to become one of the most progressive trade unions in the country and is indeed the union of choice in the local government sector.

IMATU IS WORKING TOGETHER FOR YOU!
